I am a military historian, with a focus on the Irish military experience in the eighteenth century. I consider myself a social historian of the military, prioritising ‘New’ military history to explore the impacts of warfare both on and off the battlefield. I am particularly interested in the army-societal relationship and how this influences military action and policy.
I also have research interests in nineteenth- and twentieth-century empires and conflicts and the impacts these have on soldiers and society.
Outside of research, I have considerable experience in research translation and outreach, having developed a number of workshops, courses and programmes on behalf of the Centre for Economics, Policy and History (CEPH), where I am currently Research and Policy Officer. I am passionate about outreach and bringing academic work outside of universities.
I am also a stand-up comedian with over a decade of experience on stage, and have performed in New York, UK, Singapore, and across Ireland.
